Landscans by Nicole Voevodin-cash

Nicole Voevodin-Cash is a kinetic generative sculptor based on the Sunshine Coast. Her research-driven practice explores concepts of art as a landscape and landscape as art. She defines and redefines the landscape, or the materials with which she works, using interaction as a sculptural strategy.
For the opening of the Maroochydore City Centre in 2019, Nicole created LANDscans by tracking the landscape and capturing images. Walking whilst using a hand-held scanner, Nicole recorded the engagement including the staggered movements, called digital dirt. Most of these environmental and urban images were captured during a walk on the site of Maroochydore City Centre with fellow artists before any works had commenced - permanent stored textural memories of a landscape, its colonial past, and Nicole's experience of it.
"The captured scan is a selection of the discreet visual segments of place, samples of the surrounding environment. Viewing them reveals the layered records of my impact, that of occupation, capture and engaged history. Every interaction leaves its mark including my own, capturing the microcosm of the human and natural residue of place, making the invisible, visible.
These images are raw unedited experiences and intimate encounters of micro-environments rich with life, colour, texture, experience, mood and truth. They are intimate portraits of landscape, both natural and unnatural (urban), and a true semiotic reading of place".
