People's Day by Thom Stuart

Created for the opening of the new city centre, local artist Thom Stuart was commissioned to paint 18m of hoarding as part of the yourcity.yourstory. program. His practice is concerned with the observed landscape and the presence of human bahviours within it.

The work for People’s Day embraced the themes of growth, emergence and transition using a semi abstract approach with natural motifs and built structural objects mixing to reflect the growing landscape around the site.

Sculptural linework present throughout the artwork was informed by the artist’s drawings of observed structures present within the City Centre. The palette of warm and bright colour tones within the artwork to suggest a sundrenched subtropical landscape creating a feeling of a vibrant place.

We acknowledge the Traditional owners, the Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi people, of the land on which we live and work. We pay our deep respect to their elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today, throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community.
