StudioTHI (formerly The Hornery Institute) are a not for profit agency focussed on maximising the benefit for communities of sustainable urban development. Their current work focusses on how the community and sector can increase their capacity to lead major urban transitions. Peter Browning is a senior consultant with the agency. He has a background in developing integrated strategic plans for urban and community development with government and private sectors.
Regardless of views about population growth and change in South East Queensland we can say with a fair degree of confidence that the next 25 years are likely to result in more urban change than we have experienced in the last 25 years.
While there is significant variation we know how and where growth can be managed. The densities, the typologies, designs and infrastructure that create liveable viable more sustainable places. On the whole every level of government is in agreement about what needs to be done.
What we do not do so well is address the cultural and systemic change that supports transition. Enacting change can cause real pain for communities and elected officials. This then translates to a market risk for industry, especially market followers rather than shapers and governments wanting assurance that outcomes will be successful and supported by the community.
